WELCOME TO MY BLOG

I am trying to start a youth basketball movement in Brisbane, or try to enhance the programs that are already established and build on them. I encourage feedback and ideas on how to get this project going . Also, to cease confusion, I would like to note that I am taking on this project as a part of a community development project for a class I am studying. However, I am willing to carry the project out further after this class is over. Anyway, I really need your help in getting this started, so blog away!

OMG Can This Semester Be Over Already???!?!?!

Hello fellow 7123er's-

I hope you have a had a productive (okay chaotic!) last few weeks as I did. From assessment after assessment to job searching, to moving houses... I don't know about you guys but I'm currently sussing out possible holiday destinations for mid June! :)

Anyway, due to all of that, I am behind on my postings so you will be hearing a lot from me from now on! One cool thing is that I finally was able to print out my fliers to distribute all over the city. A refresher-this was my plan b way to engage my participation. Plan A was to contact local B-ball programs and work in top-down mode... and like many of you know, I had one nice email then nothing... no returned calls... I mean NOTHING!

This weekend I will be distributing them. If anyone knows of anyone who would be interested in just talking B-Ball PLEASE forward this to them www.brisbanebasketballmovement.blogspot.com. I would appreciate it. I want honest and diverse opinions... so maybe even forward it to people that loathe basketball or are instead netball fanatics.... sweet, send them my way! :)

So how are you guys doing??? WHAT are you guys doing??

Survey Monkey

Well, I thought my busy rock-star life would prevent me from posting this week, but I guess noooot! :)

At any rate, I am putting the finishing touches on my project plan, and I was just thinking about creative ways to implement the "consult" stage of the IAP2 model. I just thought for anyone who is considering themselves amateur at technology, you might not know about survey monkey. www.surveymonkey.com is a free online tool in which you can design your own survey and see the results. So for example, to help introduce this stage I will use this tool by posting the link on my blog website, twitter, facebook, and myspace to help elicit feedback from the community. It's free, but if you want to pay extra it allows you to print charts and graphs. It's been helpful for me in the past so I thought I would pass it on to anyone who hasn't heard of it.

Well, back to my assessment... I hope you guys are finding it as exciting empowering as I am!

Engaging With Youth???

Hi Everyone,
I hope you all are not as stressed as I am writing this assessment! Actually, I am hoping to post this thread as a therapeutic exercise to relax a bit. With basically all of my assessments due in a 2.5 week period, I am finding it difficult to play catch up and focus. In the process of writing this project plan, I think I'm feeling even more stressed factoring in that it is 55% of my grade and I am still so unorganised, and my project isn't going anywhere :( I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out how to engage youth participation. Also, one major dilemma that I ran into (youth group-maybe you guys can help) is that I would like to take pictures and prove that I'm out there trying to solicit youth help for my project but I'm worried about some legal issues. Has anyone else found a way around this?

On a lighter note, I was able to take a break yesterday and go to the beach! :)

How are you guys doing with your project plans? What are some of the struggles that everyone else is feeling at this point?

I hope you all have a great week! :)

Workshop 5 While it's still fresh!

Hi Everyone,
I thought I would leave a post while everything is still fresh... so here we go!

Reflecting back on today's workshop I think it was very beneficial to do the "paper-trade" at the end. I'm not sure how many of you have read my post from last week (I just posted it last night!) but I expressed the need for a study group. It was reassuring to know I wasn't the only one and that there are actually people that are interested in meeting outside of class. Although my schedule is pretty tight, I would like to meet at least a couple of times before our Project Plan is due. Anyone interested? Leave a post and we'll work something out.

Also, I was happy that Lynda chose to go over some of Dave Andrew's work. I highly recommend reading all of his books! I had the awesome opportunity to meet him last year and have since been a big fan. In reference to 1st order change and 2nd order change, it has made rethink about what I'm doing. Would it make more sense to just find a local youth basketball program and expand on it? I'm thinking it might... chances are they've already been through the process that I'm going through right now.

I have a lot more that I would like to pour out, but to be tactful... I'll blog it and save it for the next post! :)

I look forward to hearing from you guys!

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

I am replying to your week 4 & 5 posting all in the same breath so to speak. Like you & others I have been feeling very fruastrated about people not responding to my project. Is fine for others to say CD is a slow process but when we have an assessment deadline is hard to be patient. I just heard back re my project that people have been away sick & others are on holiday hence the lack of response. I have once again explained the situaiton & it will be looked at within the next 2 weeks. The nice thing is that we are being assessed on the process/thinking not how sucessful the completed project is. I feel that Lynda appears to really understand some of the difficulities we face making this project a reality. There is strength in numbers & you are not alone.

As for marrying theory to our practice again we are in the same boat. During my field placement last year I was given an interesting piece of advice on how to deal with the almost overwhelming amount of information in the field. Just pretend it is a mud wrap, first step wrap yourself in it, allow it to be absorbed, then unwrap it & see what clear skin you have! So from that am going to just spend quality time reading, absorb for a few days then unwrap or try to make sense of it & apply it to my project.

From my experience in developing my project am thinking local might be the most managable. I kep coming up with international ideas that were in my mind great but when faced with the reality of time etc just unmanagable. Thsi has been a huge mind change for me as I have always thought & acted on a global scale. Is amazing the seeds that were sown in childhood that have really taken root in my thinking. Have you tried your local PCYC as they might have a basketball team. As a sport it is really becoming popular with local youth, I asked some of the teen-age boys I work with & they were huge fans but unable to play due to the cost :(

Rachel think the best we can all do is support each other, offer words of encouragement & if needed a shoulder to cry on, coffee & chocolate :) Oh there seems to be a few of us that think a study group would be great. Maybe on a Wed afternoon as that seems to follow on from our timetables over the last few weeks.

Keep smiling

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for you suggestion, I guess your project is going well and I am waiting to learn something about it. I am willing and would like to sit and discuss with you about our project. Please feel free show me know your timetable.

My project is to build environmental action groups and I am planning to do this. I have searched to find books on this issue but I did not get any. If you know something that are valuable for my project, please let me know.

With best wishes,

Hi there,

I was glad to see your interest in a study group. I am also interested bacause i am at the stage where i am reading the reading pack given to us by Linda and its a bit challenging as some of the readings are not straight forward. It would be great to meet and exchage wisdom as to how to integrate theory with practice. Have a look at my post and you will see some of the readings i found useful.

Kind regards,

great idea - and don't forget, these are simply the ones I thought would be useful. I tried to find at least three articles each week that would appraoch the issue from a very different angle. If they're not helpful, then don't feel you have to plough through them. Each workshop has a huge list of additional resources and part of the research process is trying to find literature that speaks to your needs. Just keep thinking: "it's a menu" not a battle plan!

Hey Rachel and everyone,

I'm not sure if anyone will look here now that we've gone into another week, but perhaps someone will as they are both called week 5??? Anyway, just wanted to mention that I'd be interested in the study group also (although like everyone it depends on the day and time). I saw someone mentioned a Wedns. afternoon... have you guys confirmed anything yet?

Where I'm at...

Hello Everyone,

First of all, thank you to _____ and _____ who responded to my posts last week. I appreciate any and all feedback, and your information you have provided me with is much appreciated! :)

Also, I just wanted to see if anyone else is feeling like they don't know where to start, or perhaps any effort you have put forth so far has been shot down, or the people you were hoping to hear back from keep neglecting you? This is where I'm at, and I would appreciate if anyone else is feeling this way to come forth so I don't feel like such a failure! :p

Also, I felt that the feedback from Lynda was really good! I wish all professors would do this before an assignment. Thank you very much Lynda! However, I'm still trying to figure out how to tie in the project (in writing) with the learning material. We talked about this in our group last week, and I was just wondering if anyone else has found this difficult, or has started the process and knows what to do? If anyone is interested in a study group let me know too.

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Rachel

Hi Rachel,
Please do not feel like you are alone. I think most of us are going through similar if not the same discouraging and frustrating feelings. I personally am experiencing what you are--the waiting for people who I've been counting on hearing from, not replying in order to get things moving. I haven't officially been shot down yet but I know others in our class have been (See ____ or ______'s) posts this week and in past weeks, or speak to Jenna about where her project has been stuck at now for quite a while--although hopefully resolved).
I think we are all finally hitting the realities of what is is like to try to begin collective action and community engagement. We have all been so excited about the possibilities of what we are capable of (Lynda has empowered us) and we are now at the stage of trying educate and empower others. Most people in the class are starting with blank slates, or a public that needs to be educated, where others are starting with organizations that have already taken action but are stagnating or are heading a new direction. All of the actions from here on out are going to be much more difficult and frustrating.
Initially, I was one of the students that emailed Lynda my fears regarding what I was capable of as well as my proposal pretty much (minus the nice formatting and a few more general ideas of how to proceed). I being a huge pessimist have had a difficult time seeing what I being one person could get started, but know it takes one spark to start a fire. I'm willing to be the spark right now. (please excuse the continuation of the metaphor) Sometimes the flint gets wet and we have to wait a while for things to dry out or we have to try something else to get the fire started. It's a process and it takes time. Try to remember that.
To be perfectly honest, i'm not planning or hoping to get very far with my project during the remaining portion of the semester, rather I'm hoping to get conversations started, get them moving in a different direction and perhaps outline some framework ideas for how to proceed the rest of the summer (in the states) and/or year. Nothing more, nothing less. This time I've made sure my goals are attainable. I am frustrated. I haven't heard more than one or two responses back since the start of the semesters where I laid out the course project and some preliminary thoughts to a personal friend back home. So yes, i'm frustrated, nervous and above all worried that I wont see anything happen. But I'm trying to stay optimistic and i think with perseverance and a bit of creativity and perhaps a bit of deviance (see the responses to _______'s post this week) we all should be able to at least facilitate a few conversations that may in time lead to communities coming together for the common good.
I aplogize if that is simply repeating what others have said or if it is more of a rant because I too am afraid, but do hope it helps. We are all in the same boat and all have open ears. Thanks for putting your fears out there this time around.
See you tomorrow!

Hi Rachel,

Similar to ____, I too am now waiting to hear back from the first conversation that I have tried to initiate. You are absolutely right - moving from our initial project ideas, and even our proposal, to some form of proper, academic plan is very daunting!! As for tieing in the literature...I don't even want to think about it!! My plan is to set aside a few days (or weeks...) after our class tomorrow, and just dive into whatever literature I can find, swim in it and absorb as much as I can, and then try to brainstorm how to fit it all in.

I am definitely keen on a study group!! I want to put forward a suggestion in class tomorrow (unless someone else is already planning on doing so!) to continue our conversations even once class has ended. I don't have anything else planned for my wednesdays other than assignments, so I would be happy to meet up sometime during class hours at uni to discuss our project plans (I wonder if others feel the same??)

Best of luck with continuing your project, you are not alone!!!

Kind regards

Request Help: Youth Basketball Brisbane

Hello Again Fellow 7123ers-
I have received some feedback and talked to some of you about my project, and for those that I have heard from I want to thank you all again. However, I guess I haven't really announced to everyone what my plan will consist of, so I will just say now that I am working towards further developing a basketball program in Brisbane. I initially thought that it would be ideal to just further develop programs for all age groups, however, for the sake of the class project, I have narrowed it down to just a youth basketball program. My main concern is that there is something like this already out there that I have no knowledge of. From the research that I have done, (who knows, I could be looking in all of the wrong places) I have concluded that basketball is in demand, but there are very few or inconsistent programs for youth (12-18) here in Brisbane.
I want to make sure that I am on the right track, and so I am asking you guys for your help. Is there anything consistent for youth in regards to basketball here in Brisbane? Also, does anyone have any recommendations? Any guidance or comments are highly encouraged. Thank you guys in advance! :)

Rachel

Hi Rachel, I am sure there are programs out there for young people to participate in b'ball. However, I suspect most of these would be at indoor or private b'ball facilities. So, it really depends where you would like to conduct your program. If are going to do it at public b'ball facilities you should get in touch with Brisbane City Council to see if they have any programs and if not if they would be interested. I am not sure who you aim to run your program through, but I am fairly sure you will need public liability insurance. Maybe there is a state or national b'ball agency that you can pay an annual insurance fee to so their insurance will cover you. Otherwise you could potentially partner with a community or youth organisation, e.g. Brisbane Youth Service, that runs youth programs. I notice there is a definite interest in b'ball amongst certain ethnic groups. With this in mind you could tie in with African refugees, for example, who are interested in participating. If this is the case you could add an extra layer to your program by engaging, integrating and empowering recent migrants through basketball. Just a thought. The problem with this message board is that I can't see what you have written so I am not sure if I have addressed everything you asked. This is a bit of brain dump. Hope it's helpful.

Crazy About Basketball
Hello Everyone, Youth Group, 10/3/10

So, I had to (very unfortunately) leave at the break to attend work, and was wondering if someone would so kindly fill me in on what you guys in the youth group discussed?

As you probably saw, my intended project is to start making basketball more available to youth in Brisbane. Now, I'm not from here, nor have I done loads of research around it, but from what I know, basketball isn't a very big youth hobby here in Brisbane, I love basketball and I want kids to grow up into adults like me that love it too. So, I wanted to start out small by introducing more and regular youth basketball camps/clinics in the Brisbane area, and then ultimately, make it more popular by introducing it into schools. However, these are just ideas, and I would like to hear what YOU guys think???

I set up my blog last week www.brisbanebasketball.blogspot.com but have yet to fix it up a little bit and make it look pretty! :) I initially just chose basketball as my topic, but after talking to a few people, I decided to narrow it down to youth basketball. So I will be changing that in my blog tomorrow (I will leave a post and let you guys know when it's all good).

Anyway, right now I have to go do work and reading for 3 other classes! :) ( I know, I said it-"I heart learning" buuut ... I think I heart sleeping just as much! ;)

I'm excited to hear what your suggestions are. Good Night guys!

-Rachel

Rachel,

I think you're onto a wonderful idea!! :) Reminds me of a similar program i know of called Midnight Basketball. Here's some info that might help inspire you:

If you need help contacting these guys, let me know! (I don't know anyone directly involved in this at the moment, but could prob find out for you if you need a hand).

Reply 2-Hi Rachel,
It's too bad we didn't get to catch up during lecture, hopefully we can sit down and talk during/ after tomorrows' class.
My project runs on the same/ similar lines as yours. I am also a member of the "youth group", focusing on promoting sports amongst youth as a means of participation, integration, and empowerment for youth. Still haven't quite narrowed down exactly where I want to focus my energies.. there are so many routes to take via fundraising / raising awareness and getting kids participating. I have been in contact with a group called "Right to Play", I'm not sure if you are familiar at all with their work, but I am a keen supported of what they do and stand for, and am looking forward to hopefully spending some time volunteering with them once this semester is over.
One of the issues I am struggling with a little bit is whether to gear my project towards setting up a program for local youth in the area to get them involved in sport, ( obviously this would be an amazing acheivement, but given the time contraints to have carried out the project, I am leaning towards getting people involved in some kind of 24 hour sports marathon, or a tournament of some kind to raise awareness and some funding that I can send to a program that is already set up and running.
I'd love to hear any advice or input you have. Looking forward to seeing everyone in class tomorrow.

Blog Follower-
It is very reassuring to hear that someone thinks it's a good idea! :) I'll go have a look right now at the site and let you know if I do need any help contacting them. Thank you!

Hello All, 5/3/2010 Friday
So, I guess one thing that surprised (in a good way) me was how quickly I found the building and class room, this is so not typical of me at all! Everyone was talking about how they looked everywhere… luckily I happened to walk past a group of engineer instructors striking, so I used that to my advantage! When I arrived though, I was also surprised to see how many people I knew and it was good to catch up with them. The novelty of "back to school" has still not died off in my late 20's as a graduate student!

This project gives me hope- I am able to tap into my creative sense, do a project on something I'm excited and passionate about, and get graded for it. Why can't every class be like this? Referring back to "Love and Fear" by Michael Leunig, I have a little bit of fear, but mostly love, as I trust that I will be learning from a talented instructor and getting good feedback and direction from my peers.

GOOD LUCK! :)

Rachel

Hello Rachel! yeah it was a bit hard to find the place but the first class was so amused.. I saw some familiar faces from previous classes of development practices then just followed them to the room. It was about my love for the course. Now am thinking of the topic for the assignment and experiencing the fear. Well yeah then love might come when i can work it out in more details. Let's keep sharing love n fear!

I ♥ learning 2, Rachel! :) yes, the return to study (and also how different it is from doing my undergrad!) has struck me by surprise too. I think the diff for me this time 'round is that it is actually more INTENTIONAL - i really didn't think too much about my choice of study straight out of high school :-p

Just like you say, doing this course I think will allow me to align my studies with issues that are really close to my heart, and the first workshop was more than enough inspiration for me to kick-start (at least!) one idea that I had been curious about for a while. So, yeah, totally echo your sentiments here! :)

With 2 minutes left in the 4th period... can she STILL DO IT??

... make progress that is...

Well guys- like most of you, my project has not taken off. After several email attempts, and fliers distributed, I am out of ideas on how to get this thing started. I am not giving up just here though. Basketball was my passion for many years, and still is, I'm just busier these days ;) ... But I think the next thing that is left to do is just find a team to play on and work through engaging people that way. This is what I will be doing over the next couple of months during break. I purposely chose a topic that I would stick with so I would be disciplined throughout the semester to get it running and truly be dedicated to it, and I will keep my word that I still want to create a "Basketball Movement" here in Brissy.

Okay, so you're wondering how could I possibly be trying to make progress with my project because I have NOTHING but one post here on my blog? Well thank you guys for being my friends (the ones who are) and I have engaged you through either my facebook account, the fliers I distributed, or through class. Speaking of class...

The next post will consist of the posts I have left on the discussion board for the last 13 weeks (that sounds like SO long ago!!). It made more sense to do this because there were more people following the discussion board than my blog, and so I thought I would just use that as a tool and replicate it here.

SOOOoooo.... please see the next post for a replay of what the last 13 weeks have looked like.
