WELCOME TO MY BLOG

I am trying to start a youth basketball movement in Brisbane, or try to enhance the programs that are already established and build on them. I encourage feedback and ideas on how to get this project going . Also, to cease confusion, I would like to note that I am taking on this project as a part of a community development project for a class I am studying. However, I am willing to carry the project out further after this class is over. Anyway, I really need your help in getting this started, so blog away!

Request Help: Youth Basketball Brisbane

Hello Again Fellow 7123ers-
I have received some feedback and talked to some of you about my project, and for those that I have heard from I want to thank you all again. However, I guess I haven't really announced to everyone what my plan will consist of, so I will just say now that I am working towards further developing a basketball program in Brisbane. I initially thought that it would be ideal to just further develop programs for all age groups, however, for the sake of the class project, I have narrowed it down to just a youth basketball program. My main concern is that there is something like this already out there that I have no knowledge of. From the research that I have done, (who knows, I could be looking in all of the wrong places) I have concluded that basketball is in demand, but there are very few or inconsistent programs for youth (12-18) here in Brisbane.
I want to make sure that I am on the right track, and so I am asking you guys for your help. Is there anything consistent for youth in regards to basketball here in Brisbane? Also, does anyone have any recommendations? Any guidance or comments are highly encouraged. Thank you guys in advance! :)

Hi Rachel, I am sure there are programs out there for young people to participate in b'ball. However, I suspect most of these would be at indoor or private b'ball facilities. So, it really depends where you would like to conduct your program. If are going to do it at public b'ball facilities you should get in touch with Brisbane City Council to see if they have any programs and if not if they would be interested. I am not sure who you aim to run your program through, but I am fairly sure you will need public liability insurance. Maybe there is a state or national b'ball agency that you can pay an annual insurance fee to so their insurance will cover you. Otherwise you could potentially partner with a community or youth organisation, e.g. Brisbane Youth Service, that runs youth programs. I notice there is a definite interest in b'ball amongst certain ethnic groups. With this in mind you could tie in with African refugees, for example, who are interested in participating. If this is the case you could add an extra layer to your program by engaging, integrating and empowering recent migrants through basketball. Just a thought. The problem with this message board is that I can't see what you have written so I am not sure if I have addressed everything you asked. This is a bit of brain dump. Hope it's helpful.

Hi Rachel,
You might like to check out the site for Providing Awareness with Education and Sport (PAWES). David Yohan, the founder, arrived in Australia in the 90's as a refugee.
