WELCOME TO MY BLOG

I am trying to start a youth basketball movement in Brisbane, or try to enhance the programs that are already established and build on them. I encourage feedback and ideas on how to get this project going . Also, to cease confusion, I would like to note that I am taking on this project as a part of a community development project for a class I am studying. However, I am willing to carry the project out further after this class is over. Anyway, I really need your help in getting this started, so blog away!

OMG Can This Semester Be Over Already???!?!?!

Hello fellow 7123er's-

I hope you have a had a productive (okay chaotic!) last few weeks as I did. From assessment after assessment to job searching, to moving houses... I don't know about you guys but I'm currently sussing out possible holiday destinations for mid June! :)

Anyway, due to all of that, I am behind on my postings so you will be hearing a lot from me from now on! One cool thing is that I finally was able to print out my fliers to distribute all over the city. A refresher-this was my plan b way to engage my participation. Plan A was to contact local B-ball programs and work in top-down mode... and like many of you know, I had one nice email then nothing... no returned calls... I mean NOTHING!

This weekend I will be distributing them. If anyone knows of anyone who would be interested in just talking B-Ball PLEASE forward this to them www.brisbanebasketballmovement.blogspot.com. I would appreciate it. I want honest and diverse opinions... so maybe even forward it to people that loathe basketball or are instead netball fanatics.... sweet, send them my way! :)

So how are you guys doing??? WHAT are you guys doing??

  1. Hi Rachel!

Unfortunately I'm not into basketball...or playing any sport for that matter! But I just wanted to say that it sounds great what you're doing. That must of been quite a bit of an effort designing and printing out flyers, not to mention expensive! I'm definitely finding it hard to find time to actually act out my plan in between work and SO many assignments I have due at the moment. I'm in the same boat as you...I haven't been too good at keeping up with posts on the discussion board. When we first started this class and Lynda said we would get a percentage for the discussion board, I thought what an easy grade that would be. However, I didn't factor into the equation, a job and about a thousand other assignment!!

In answer to your question, I'm trying to raise awareness for people living in slums who are being unfairly kicked out of their homes by the government. I went to Cambodia in August and met people this has happened to so this is close to my heart but as I said, I'm finding it difficult to find time to organise anything. Plus, I hate to admit this, but I think I'm scared that noone is going to care! I guess its time for me to face my fear!

All the best with the flyers

  2. Hi Rachel,

Like you, we (I do this project with some colleagues) are trying to running informal meeting/workshops at cafe shops at the weekends. Actually, we did some meetings and there were many participants, however, we have not set up action groups because we need more participants as well as making participants understand about our project before setting up action groups. We hope that in the next few weeks, we can have more participants and can organize them into some groups based on their interests (collecting rubbish, processing sewage or reordering advertisement boards on the streets).

  3. Hi Rachel and fellow communiteers,

Thanks for starting off the thread, Rachel, and three cheers for getting your flyers done! I am starting to feel the momentum behind my project too. I started implementing my project in earnest at the beginning of this month when I launched my blogsite (I guess I could call it a 'launch' at least?). Prior to this, I had been nervously and quite selectively emailing it to people while I was still nutting out my action strategy.

I will be holding an inaugural workshop on Monday 24th for participants to meet each other and explore how capoeira-based leisure programs might suit the different communities that the participants work within. I have been getting some really helpful ideas about the workshop content and, based on this, will be including an action-learning segment, as well as some live Brazillian music. If I get enough RSVPs I'd like to use a 'conversation cafe' method to explore different views that people have about the philosophies of capoeira and of fostering social cohesion...so will see how I go...Am also looking for some back-up activities though, if attendance is limited…

  4. Hi Rachel

Thanks for the update on your project. I've tried to connect to the www.brisbanebasketballmovement.blogspot.com but I couldn't get through… may be this is not the correct address?

It has taken long before I could initiate my project aiming at assisting Burundian single women from a refugee background to find accommodation in the Logan area.

I am so excited as I will be holding my first meeting with my target group on Tuesday 18 th at 2:00 pm at the Logan North Library. It has been a big challenge linking with them as they do not have access to email or blog yet J . Therefore information has been conveyed the old fashioned way: Word of mouth. This wouldn't have been possible without the assistance of the community leaders though. One of the leaders is a single woman who has faced issues in finding accommodation therefore she is very keen to participate in the project and to find ways to address the problem.

I am planning to develop the programme for the meeting this week end and hope that I will have a wonderful and productive meeting with the women.

    Cheers,
